About MRC

A Community for Population and Healthcare Delivery Research

The Mongan Research Collaborative (MRC) in the Department of Medicine at Mass General Brigham (MGB) is a community of researchers dedicated to achieving health equity and improving the lives of people with complex health needs through research and training in population and health care delivery team science. The MRC builds on over two decades of accomplishments of the former Mongan Institute, consisting of research centers focused on rapidly generating transformative knowledge to improve health care delivery, population health, and health equity through an integrated program of research and training -- spanning data science to delivery science and evaluative science to implementation science -- in partnership with local, national, and international communities, collaborators, and health care systems. MRC faculty represent a variety of disciplines and methods including epidemiology, predictive analytics, cost-effectiveness, health policy, decision science, health disparities, health intervention, and implementation research.

MRC offerings

Building on the legacy of the Mongan Institute, the MRC will support researchers through career development programs, educational offerings, and opportunities for collaboration. By connecting investigators across disciplines and career stages, the MRC will help advance innovative research and translate discoveries into better health and healthcare delivery.

Mock K & R Grant Review Program: Building on one of the Mongan Institute's most successful initiatives, the MRC will continue the Mock K & R Grant Review Program, which helps early-career investigators successfully transition to independent funding. The program has demonstrated exceptional outcomes, with approximately 91% and 50% of participants securing K and R01 awards, respectively.

Healthcare Data & Clinical Implementation Science Certificate Programs: The MRC will continue the Mongan-affiliated certificate programs and educational offerings that provide training in healthcare delivery science, healthcare data science and observational research, clinical implementation science, and related disciplines. These programs equip researchers and healthcare professionals with the skills needed to generate evidence, improve care delivery, and translate research into practice.

MRC Center Presentation Series: Periodic seminars and presentations will highlight the work of MRC-affiliated research centers, showcasing innovative research, sharing best practices, and encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration across centers.

Our History

Under the leadership of Dr. David Blumenthal and later Dr. Lisa Iezzoni, the Mongan Institute for Health Policy was established in 1998 as a single center to advance research aimed at improving the quality and efficiency of healthcare locally and nationally. In 2015, Dr. Katrina Armstrong, Department of Medicine Chair, recommended creating an institute dedicated to population and healthcare delivery science research. The resulting vision led to the launch of the modern Mongan Institute in 2016, led by interim director, Dr. Joshua Metlay, and most recently, Dr. Stephen Bartels.

Named in honor of Dr. James J. Mongan, whose career exemplified the intersection of healthcare delivery, public policy, and system transformation, the Mongan Institute consistently championed research that improves the health of patients and populations.

After 28 years, the Mongan name has become synonymous with collaboration, mentorship, innovation, and impact.

Under Dr. Bartels, the Mongan Institute grew from 7 centers with 75 faculty into a vibrant scientific community consisting of 13 centers and over 165 faculty that united diverse research centers and programs focused on clinical translational epidemiology, data science, predictive modeling, cost-effectiveness analysis, global health, decision science, health disparity research, health policy, health behavior, survey research, outcomes research, oncology, intervention trials, and implementation research. Among the extraordinary accomplishments of this 8-year period was aggregate growth in grants from $60M to $120M; over 45 “K” career development awards; over 1200 published research papers annually; and altering the representation of translational research at MassGeneral Brigham to add to basic and clinical research a third pillar of “population and health care delivery science.
